Sealants

What are Sealants?

Sealants are a great way to fully protect your back teeth. Posterior (back) teeth are often the most susceptible to decay. Unfortunately, it can be downright impossible to clean these teeth properly because of all the deep pitting and fissures present. In order to cover these fissures and grooves, clear sealants can be applied and will last for up to three years.

Why would Sealants be needed?

The reason you might benefit from sealants is because your back teeth have deep grooves and fissures. For children, sealants are a great way to prevent the back teeth from developing decay, which is common among school age children who don't always have the best brushing and eating habits. Sealants are totally clear, so no one but the dental team will even know that they're in place.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Sealants are ideal for both children and adults alike. There is absolutely no age limit when it comes to who would benefit from sealants. We can examine your back teeth to determine if you would benefit from having sealants applied. Your new sealants can last for anywhere from one to three years, and we can reapply the sealants as often as they are needed.

What happens during the Sealant procedure?

The process begins by cleaning and drying the back teeth. We then apply a clear liquid varnish to the teeth. This varnish is hardened and cured into place using a special dental light. The light helps to cure the sealants so that they are firmly and securely in place. You should still brush the back teeth as you normally would. Sealants can help to prevent areas of decay. Tooth decay requires treatment and may involve fillings, root canals and even full extraction of the tooth itself. Your sealants are crystal clear so that they are virtually invisible to the naked eye. They are a great way to keep your teeth healthy and strong.
