Sealants

What are Sealants?

Sealants are a great way to protect your back teeth. Posterior (back) teeth are often the most susceptible to decay due to food, bacteria and stain working its way into the fissures and grooves of these teeth. In order to cover these fissures and grooves, clear sealants can be applied and will last for up to three years.

Why would Sealants be needed?

The reason you or your child might benefit from sealants is because your back teeth have deep grooves and fissures. For children, sealants are a great way to prevent the back teeth from developing decay, which is common among school age children who don't always have the best brushing and eating habits. Sealants are totally clear, so no one but the dental team will even know that they're in place.

What happens during the Sealant application process?

The process begins by cleaning and drying the back teeth. We then apply a clear liquid material to the teeth that flows into the pits and fissures. Then we cure the liquid using a curing light. The light helps to cure the sealants so they become firm and secure. You should still brush and floss the back teeth as instructed by our hygienist. Sealants can help to prevent areas of decay. Tooth decay requires treatment and may involve fillings, crowns, root canals and even full extraction of the tooth itself. Your sealants are crystal clear so that they are virtually invisible to the naked eye. They are a great way to keep your teeth healthy and strong.
